New trends in the restaurant industry

April 13, 2024

The restaurant industry has undergone significant changes over the years, and there are always new trends emerging. While you may not want to necessarily hop on trends that clash with your target market or restaurant concept, here are some of the trends that we can expect to see playing a big role in the restaurant industry.

Technology Integration:

Technology has always been an essential part of the restaurant industry, but the future is expected to bring even more technology integration. Restaurants are now using tablets and other devices to take orders and payments, and automation will become increasingly important in the kitchen. For example, robots and artificial intelligence could help with food preparation and cooking, or in bringing food to tables.

Sustainability:

Sustainability has become a buzzword in the restaurant industry, and we can expect to see more emphasis on sustainable practices in the future. Restaurants are looking for ways to reduce waste, minimize energy consumption, and use environmentally-friendly ingredients. Reducing waste and energy usage also saves your restaurant money, so these are win-win activities.

Plant-Based Options:

The demand for plant-based food options has increased significantly in recent years, and this trend will no-doubt continue as diners’ eating habits evolve. More restaurants are adding vegan and vegetarian options to their menus, and some restaurants are even shifting to a completely plant-based menu.

Delivery and Takeout:

The pandemic has accelerated the trend towards delivery and takeout options, and it is clear that diners do not want these conveniences to go away. Restaurants are investing in their delivery and takeout infrastructure to cater to customers who prefer to eat at home. This is another area where robots are being tested.

Experiential Dining:

Customers who got used to cooking for themselves at home are looking for unique dining experiences when they go out to eat, and we can expect to see more experiential dining options in the future. This could include immersive dining experiences, interactive dining options, and themed restaurants.

Personalization:

Whether we’re talking about sneakers, clothing, cars, or an evening out with friends, personalization is another trend permeating every aspect of people’s lives. More diners are seeking a  personalized experience, and an increasing number of restaurants will offer custom menus and services. This could include personalized recommendations based on customer data or allowing customers to customize their own meals.

Ghost Kitchens:

Ghost kitchens, also known as virtual kitchens, are commercial kitchens that operate exclusively for delivery and takeout. As restaurants look for new ways to meet the growing demand for delivery and takeout options, we can expect the industry to increasingly rely on ghost kitchens in the near future.

The restaurant industry is constantly evolving, and many of the above trends are already shaping the industry for the better. By staying on top of these trends and incorporating those that make sense for your market and your bottom line, restaurants can stay relevant and provide exceptional dining experiences to their customers.
